Wheel Paint Peeling or Flaking? Here’s What Causes It
Peeling, flaking, or bubbling paint can quickly make an otherwise good wheel look badly damaged. In this video, Lucas Thomas of New Again Wheel Repair explains why wheel finishes fail, shows several real examples, and discusses what can be done to restore the wheel’s appearance.
Why Does Wheel Paint Peel and Flake?
A wheel’s painted or clear-coated finish can begin peeling when moisture, road salt, brake dust, or harsh cleaning chemicals work their way beneath the coating. Chips, scratches, curb damage, age, and improper previous refinishing can also weaken the bond between the finish and the wheel. Once that bond fails, the damaged area may continue spreading and expose more of the wheel’s surface.
Can a Peeling or Flaking Wheel Be Repaired?
In many cases, a peeling or flaking wheel can be professionally refinished instead of replaced. The damaged and failing coating must be properly removed, the exposed surface carefully prepared, and the wheel refinished with compatible products. Proper preparation is essential—a quick touch-up over loose or failing material will not provide a lasting result.
Signs Your Wheel’s Finish Is Failing
• Clear coat lifting or peeling around the wheel’s edges
• Paint flaking from the spokes or machined surfaces
• White, cloudy, or discolored areas beneath the finish
• Bubbling near chips, scratches, or curb damage
• Exposed aluminum or corrosion that appears to be spreading
